We’re only three weeks into this term and already there are lots of student opportunities and activities to update you about.
Greenpower Education Trust
Promoting sustainable engineering to young people
Thanks to Ben Adams for sending me this report about the Greenpower racing project.
Ben says, “Our second race of the year was at Castle Combe motor racing circuit in Wiltshire, where we faced much tougher competition than our previous race of the season at Newquay Airport. Despite the promising start to practice, we soon had a major issue with our accelerator, and the rest of practice was spent sourcing a new one and fitting it to the car. Race one started well, but our car had to be brought in early due to the same accelerator fault, meaning we only finished 36th. By the second race, we had fitted a relay and another new accelerator, and the car performed well, achieving our best ever race distance of 35.15 miles, meaning we finished eleventh in this race and eleventh overall. Our next race will be at the International Final next month at Rockingham Motor Speedway. Thanks to Mr Ames and Mrs Flack for taking us to the event, Mr Hexter for transporting the car, and Parts Alliance for providing us with team overalls”.
DofE Bronze Expedition
Well done to 60 Year 10 students who completed their assessed Duke of Edinburgh’s Award bronze expedition last weekend.
Another 60 students will be on Dartmoor this weekend. Thank you to all the staff who will be supporting them.
Whole School Assembly
Mr Adams led our whole school assembly on Wednesday.
During the assembly Alizeh Abdul Rahman, Year 13 student and Member of the UK Youth Parliament, introduced ‘Make Your Mark’.
Alizeh explained that MYM is a national ballot for all students to decide what Members of the UKYP should debate and vote on to be their campaign in 2018 – definitely a demonstration of social responsibility.
It was good to see so many new faces, especially Year 7 parents, at the first meeting of the PTFA. We would like to encourage any parents interesting in joining or supporting the school to attend a drinks reception at 18.00 on Wednesday 1 November as part of the annual general meeting.
The U13 rugby season got off to a good start this week with a 20 – 5 win against Stoke Damerel and a 5 – 0 win against Eggbuckland.
Mr Burt reports an ‘excellent victory’ for the 1st XV over Mount Kelly in the U18 NatWest Cup. He added that this was a tough match in dreadful conditions.
It was also a great start to the year for Year 9 who beat the Cornwall County Champions Saltash 10 – 3 in the National Cup.
It’s also been good to see so many students attending football coaching at lunchtimes this week.
